May 16, 2013 Luna Beads: The Mia Muse Guide to Strengthening Your Pelvic Floor • Longer, stronger, more attainable orgasms • Reduced risk of incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders • A faster return to tone and tightness after childbirth • Strengthens vaginal muscles in preparation for childbirth A Little History Regarding Your PC muscle and Kegel Exercises First of all, why are Kegel exercises important? In 1952, Dr Arnold Kegel developed exercises to assist women with urinary incontinence. It was found that in these women, the pubococcygeus (PC) muscles were out of shape and that exercising these muscles eliminated their medical concerns whilst increasing these women’s potential for genital sensation and orgasm! This is probably due to the fact that blood flow increases to muscles that are exercised and that increased blood flow is related to the ease of arousal and orgasm. The Luna Beads are a product that enable you to do your Kegel exercises without doing anything except inserting the beads. You can wear two beads at a time supported by the casing or one bead – depending on what feels comfortable and how much work you need to get your vagina working. Important points about the beads: • Pink beads weigh 28 grams each and the blue beads weigh 37 grams each. As it will take stronger muscles to wear the heavier beads, work up to this weight. Just like you would when using free weights to work your bisceps! • The beads have a weighted ball inside the larger ball and as the wearer moves around the ball moves around too, which stimulates the vaginal muscles to clench around the bead. Voila! You’ve got yourself a workout. • The more movement the better! Don’t go too crazy on your first few trys though – one friend went for a jog with them in the first time and pretty much had to jog straight home after a km or so! • Initially it is recommended you wear two pink beads, work up to one and then one pink & one blue and then finally one blue. It confused me initially because it would seem like putting two beads in was harder than one, however your vagina has to work less to keep two in than it does one. I’ll demonstrate this point in the how to guide video coming up. • Although the beads are great in prepartion for childbirth and recovery after childbirth, do not where them while you are pregnant. Frequently Asked Questions Q) They look so big…are they going to fit?A) Whilst Luna Beads may look intimidating at first, you will be happy to know that our vaginas are amazingly accommodating. If it is your first time using the Luna Beads, try putting some time aside to practice inserting them. Because of the silicone casing, they are designed to slide in nice and easily. To get started, try lying on the bed with your legs over the edge. Place some lubricant on the crown (top) bead and spread your legs. With the girdle bending toward the anterior (front) wall of your vagina, slowly insert the crown bead. Try to relax your vagina as you insert the beads as this will make the process a bit easier. Once the crown bead is in, continue until the second bead is inserted. Gently push the Luna Beads until you feel as though they are touching your cervix at the top of your vagina. If the Luna Beads are not inserted high enough, you will most likely be more aware of them and they may start to slip out, particularly when you are urinating. If you have problems inserting them, keep trying…you will get there! Q) My beads have fallen out! What do I do?A) Try not to panic. For some women, particularly after childbirth, their pelvic floor has been weakened and needs some additional TLC before starting with Luna Beads. Try doing some daily Kegel exercises for a few weeks and then re-attempt inserting the Luna Beads in order to continue your regime and get that little bit more out of it. Start with the lightest beads first (petal pink – 28g) and become accustomed to these before using the heavier beads. Early on, you may need to be more conscious about holding on to the Beads when they are inside your vagina but with continued use, you will be able to use them without being aware of them. In the early stages, use them for an hour or two in situations without any vigorous movement and then try to graduate to longer periods of use, up to 8 hours. If your beads fall out, don’t be discouraged or give up. We are all at different stages and have different needs at different times. Can I still use Luna Beads?A) Unless you are having complications or discomfort from your IUD, there is no reason why you can’t use Luna Beads. As an IUD is in place within the uterus and does not extend down into the vagina, you should still be able to wear Luna Beads comfortably.
